I Peter 2:2, 3 (Pt. 2)  Thought/Prayer:  Two Types Tasting.  Topics:  2 at end.

“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:  If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.”  KJV http://www.bible.com (Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com)

We see here that this verse has two types of tasting:  We will taste the milk of the Word, thus creating growth as though in a physical body; and we also taste of the Lord.  How thought-provoking.  This is especially interesting when we think about Jesus Christ being the Word of God.  “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”  (John 1:14 KJV)

So we taste the milk of the Word, and we “taste” Jesus Who is the Word.  It would seem, then, that reading our Bibles or memorizing scripture gives us a double dose of the Lord.  Even before the Bible was printed, with the result that an everyday person could understand more about the Lord, people could still grasp the concepts in the Word of God by just hearing about Jesus.  In fact, isn’t that how the Word first was passed person-to-person?  That was the way He was tasted, by everyone sharing Who He was and what He had done for them.

Anything we taste has the potential to fill us up.  But to get full, we have to taste a lot, taking in many tastes one upon another.  So, isn’t it true that the more we read or study the scriptures, Jesus fills us up more and more?  (And, as an aside, the Holy Spirit is great at filling us also:  “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.” [Eph. 5:18 KJV])

It is the taste of the Lord’s graciousness that is mentioned in this passage.  Could we say our favorite foods have a certain gracious aspect?  Jesus provides the epitome of a gracious taste-test.

Lord, help us to desire to “taste” you daily and over and over.  Help us to desire You and Your Word, and You as the Word, such as we look forward to our favorite dinner or dessert.  Help us to want to find you, as a baby cries for milk: You, in Your graciousness, waiting to be tasted by those whom You love.  May we remember this as we think of babies in the womb and make an even greater connection to You and Your love for them.
