I Samuel 10:24-26 (Pt. 3)  Kindness Remembered:  A Pair of Socks.  Topics:  2 at end.

“And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.  Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house. And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.”  KJV http://www.bible.com (Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com)

When talking of home and its importance, such as in this scripture, we think of those who have no home.

The homeless man who died in our city recently, the last of 11 who lost their lives this year, had a kind heart.  At the vigil of remembrance for all the homeless who died, another homeless man commented kindly about his lost friend.  He said that his friend bought him a pair of socks, that he did little things for others.

It was a touching statement.  It spoke to the fact that the homeless are not faceless.  (I’m sure the kind face of his buddy will be remembered a long time.)  Also, they are not subdued into heartlessness – rather, they may dig deeper than any of us, in contrast to our lives’ situations.  They who have so little:  Giving out of a spirit of generosity.  Would that we all could to such a degree!  A pair of socks may not seem like much, but it was a beautiful gift to the man who apparently had no socks.  And, for the giver whom we mourn, it may been a costly gift.

The small gift of a dollar or two toward a pro-life prayer ministry may seem to be a great amount to someone strapped for cash.  The small gift can become a great one, in the hands of our God who directs those in crisis –pregnancy ministries.

Lord, help us to not disregard the small things.  Even a homeless man is today being remembered for generosity and kindness.  Help us not to disdain the “small.”  God uses all our gifts.  And he is a God who is kind toward the down-and-out, such as our homeless man was before losing his life.
