I Samuel 26:11 Thought/Prayer:  The Bible’s Beautiful Waters, Jug and Sword.  Topics:  2 at end.

“David and one of his soldiers, Abishai, had opportunity to kill David’s adversary, King Saul, as he slept.  David says this:  “The LORD forbid that I should put forth mine hand against the LORD’S anointed: but now take, I pray thee, the spear that is at his head, and the cruse of water, and let us go.”  (ERV)  Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com.)

In this rather surprising account, we see a jug of water at center stage, along with a spear . . . both objects belonging to the sleeping King of Israel, in an army camp.  King Saul was trying to kill David out of jealousy.  In this account, David and Abishai, a soldier, go by night into Saul’s army camp as everyone is deeply sleeping.  Abishai thinks the purpose of the trip is to take the life of the king.  But David says not; Saul is anointed of God.  He says for them to just take Saul’s spear and his water jug.

They did that, returned to David’s camp, and David hollered to Saul from a far off, telling Saul that he had his spear and his jug of water.  Saul realizes that David could have killed him.  Saul confesses sin and ceases from hunting down David.

The jug of water has big significance here, representing “what could have been.”  Once again, water in the Bible is used in a creative manner.  Who would think that it (and also a spear, of course) could change the mind of a king to stop hunting down someone he perceived as an enemy.

Perhaps the sword could be seen as representing the means of victory.  But water is much more necessary than a sword for maintaining life.  If the sword and water jug had not been retrieved by one of Saul’s men, the king would have missed the sword as protection; but he would have missed the water as life-giving.

Lord, in an event such as this, just let us appreciate its description and the value of not only a sword, but of simple water.  We battle with Your Sword of the Spirit, Lord, against those who stand against created life.  But it is in the value of a jug of water – and the Water of Life given to others – that lies the value of true LIFE.  In Jesus.

Topics:  Pray for wisdom in life’s battles for LIFE, as to when to apply the Holy Spirit’s “sword” and when to offer Jesus’ precious water.
