Psalm 59:16, 17   Thought/Prayer:  Darkness, to Hallowed in Light.  Topics:  2 at end.

“But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.  Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.”  KJV http://www.bible.com  (Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com)

As Halloween comes around every year, perhaps we think of part of the original meaning that was probably a mixture of Catholic teaching and pagan folklore.  All Hallow’s Eve (Halloween) was the night before All Hallows Day, a day honoring those of remembrance regarding service in the faith.  Hallowed means holy or held in reverence.  On the eve of this special day, different customs over centuries were practiced with the intent of warding off dark spirits as the holy day approached.  Hence, we end up with costumes worn in darkness, leering scary pumpkins and ghostly and be-witching tales of the dark.  All now done in fun.

We as Christians must deal with forces of darkness as is explained perhaps in the most clear manner in Ephesians 6.  We fight, we are told, against the powers of the air, against unseen dark forces.  But we are not afraid.  We have the Lord on our side, and as the above scripture tells us, God is my defense and the God of my mercy.”  Defense and mercy; what better combination could there be?  He defends us when we are attacked, but His heart is of mercy toward us, forgiving our shortcomings.  It’s beautiful.

In our country, we celebrate Halloween for fun, and we probably don’t think much of the hallowed part of the events, the day following.  But maybe there is a word picture here onto which we may grasp.  Halloween representing darkness (or warding it off) gives way to a day to remember those who have served well in the service of the Lord.  Darkness to light.

What we want in the battle to do away with abortion is:  Comfort in the darkness of the safe womb; and then out into the light come beautiful living babies with all their potentials in life.  For this, Lord, we pray.  We pray for the light to dawn upon pregnant mothers, that they will save their babies, safe in the comforting darkness of the womb.

Topics:  Pray for women in unplanned pregnancies to see the Light of Jesus and come to it for themselves and for their unborn.
