Not long ago, Planned Parenthood decided to put up a fence on public property in order to stop pro-life sidewalk counselors from helping women who were going into the facility to kill their children.  Despite the presence of at least a half dozen deathscorts (pro-abortion escorts), sidewalk counselors have been able to save hundreds of lives from certain death, and hundreds of women and men from being scarred forever.

Dozens of students from Christendom, a Christian University about an hour away from Washington, drive into town every week so that they can pray in the grassy area just to the side of the sidewalk which leads up to the abortion mill.  They now have to stand out on the main sidewalk area to pray.

Rev. Patrick Mahoney held a press conference on the main sidewalk while occasionally communicating with D.C. officers.

The officers had to check with their superiors whether or not the area in question was going to be viewed as a public or private area.  In the end, the officer told Mahoney that the area is a private area owned by Planned Parenthood.  Mahoney stressed that there is a public manhole owned by the city of Washington D.C. in the middle of the sidewalk of the disputed area, and that his attorneys had done a thourough check on the legality of the fence.  The attoreys said there was no legal basis of their claim that it became private property just because they erected a fence there.

A number of pro-life people and organizations spoke out against this law.

Erik Whittington - Director Rock for Life

Whittington asked “When do we draw the line?  Right now, they’re saying, this is okay, that’s not.  (referring to the main sidewalk compared to the sidewalk leading to the abortion mill)  But if we concede this, what’s next?”

Peter Shinn - President Pro-Life Unity

Shinn stated “They’re trying to get us to shut up and get us away from the abortion mills.  We’re shutting them down and they know it, and don’t like it”

Rev. Mahoney went out to the middle of the public sidewalk, in the disputed area, and knelt to pray to God.  The officers stood back until he finished his prayer.

When Mahoney finished, he was handcuffed and taken to the police car.

Asked if he had any final words before the officers took him away, Mahoney said “Just continue to pray and pray that the church would respond and that many would come”

Rev. Mahoney was then taken away to jail, the lone defender for our rights to pray on public property.
