Ronald Reagan: A Man Who Counted Loss for Gain

A Man Who Counted Loss to Gain: Ronald Reagan

“Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ.”

Philippians 3:8

Following a past which many would consider boast-worthy for all of its bedazzling stardom and glittering popularity, such a legacy no longer enchanted former screen actor, Ronald Reagan; a wholly different purpose embodied his entire being. Shortly prior to his success in the campaign of 1980 and throughout his presidential conduct, Mr. Reagan proposed a single, encompassing desire——that was, to reverse the daunting results spiraling from the Roe vs. Wade case of 1973.

Despite the duties before him as executive leader of the nation, Reagan’s overwhelming passion proved genuine in his efforts towards authoring a book. Published in 1984 and entitled “Abortion and the Conscience of a Nation,” its pages affirmed the concepts of inherent freedom and the God-given right to life. This inherent freedom, Reagan firmly affirmed, was not selective——but characterized every life conceived. Mr. Reagan saw clearly the importance of Life awareness, and concentrated heavily upon supporting legislations such as the Human Life Bill—-which, upon its ratification, would have recognized the right to life for every unborn child. He also succeeded in proclaiming January 17, 1988 the National Sanctity of Human Life Day.

Though his ambitious goal of dissolving abortion waits to be met, President Reagan’s echoing words and actions provide a foundation upon which like-minds can continue to build. With the persevering conviction that we truly are a nation “gone under” without God (http://www.prayeralert.org/alertarchives/alert-040602.html), our former president did not fail, but prevailed! His life bore testimony that all to be gained is eternal, and that individual obedience to the statutes of our God is seed enough for a national revival. May we, like Mr. Reagan, be reminded that what is earned for temporary gain cannot compare to “treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal (Matthew 6:19-20).”

Love In Christ,
