Iowa lawmakers take up abortion fight; Omaha announces location for new clinic
DES MOINES, Iowa—Iowa lawmakers are drafting a bill similar to a restrictive Nebraska abortion law to prevent a Nebraska doctor who performs late-term abortions from opening a clinic in Council Bluffs.
A new law that bans abortions after 20 weeks, except in cases in which the mother’s life is at risk, went into effect in Nebraska on Oct. 15, leading Dr. LeRoy Carhart to announce plans to open a clinic in Iowa, where abortions are banned after the sixth month of pregnancy, unless the mother’s health or life is endangered.
Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland opened a new health center for women and men in the Omaha area. The center opened Wednesday at 3105 N. 93rd St., a mile east of its former location.
The clinic will provide reproductive health services, including cancer screenings, breast health care, well woman exams, contraceptive services, sexually transmitted infections prevention and treatment, LGBT services and more, Planned Parenthood said. At some point, the clinic also will offer abortion services, said Susan Allen, Nebraska communications manager.
